What to eat, see and drink east of the Las Vegas Strip

Museums, Thai food, beer halls and 24-hour dive bars a few minutes behind the resort towers, with 2026 hours and door rules.

A huge black-and-yellow radiation trefoil marks the Atomic Museum on East Flamingo, where a concrete bunker theatre screens the test blasts set off 65 miles north. The same few streets hold the stage where Elvis played 636 shows and the Thai dining room that reopened on Sahara Avenue in May 2026.

The Atomic Museum and the free art rooms

The Atomic Museum (East Flamingo) is a low tan desert-modern block, and the trefoil on the front wall is visible from the road. Inside, benches face the screen in the dim Ground Zero Theater, built as a concrete bunker. The galleries hold a real Nevada Test Site guard post next to a wall of mushroom-cloud photographs. Testing 65 miles north once drew dawn party crowds onto hotel roofs, and an hour here explains why the city grew where it did. Walk-ins are fine and entry is $$. The museum is a Smithsonian Affiliate; docent-led tours and group rates are arranged in advance.

The Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art (edge of the UNLV campus) is the most serious contemporary art room in Nevada and it costs nothing, with a $5 suggested donation at the desk. A xeric garden of barrel cactus and agave fronts the squat brick building, gravel paths running through it. The galleries inside are stark white cubes hung with contemporary Nevada art. It reopens on 23 October 2026 after an exhibition changeover, then runs Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. No booking is needed and no door policy applies.

Winchester Dondero Cultural Center (McLeod Drive) is county-run art, dance and theatre with a local audience and no admission charge. The single-storey building sits behind a desert demonstration garden of mesquite and desert willow, with a skate park alongside. A small black-box theatre stands next to the Winchester Wall Gallery, and theatre tickets start at $10. It takes you furthest out of the resort bubble without leaving the district.

Where to stay on Paradise Road and Koval Lane

Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, Curio Collection by Hilton (Paradise Road) is the Y-shaped tower with red Virgin lettering, the former Hard Rock Hotel, rebranded in 2021. The 60,000 sq ft Mohegan casino floor sits low and dark beneath the rooms, and the palm-lined pool district outside has an outdoor amphitheatre at one end. It is the district's main stay, quieter and cheaper than the Strip, and ten minutes' walk from it. Rooms run $$$, and pool cabanas and event space are bookable.

Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino (north of the Convention Center) is the immense curved white 30-storey slab that opened as the International and spent years as the Las Vegas Hilton. A bronze Elvis statue stands in the lobby. Behind it, the red-curtained International Theater is where he played 636 shows, and the 2026 Elvis series puts '1970 LIVE!' on that original stage on 24 October. The property was built for convention crowds, so the vast SuperBook and the show rooms both absorb large parties. Rooms are $$.

Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino, Las Vegas

Ellis Island Hotel, Casino & Brewery (Koval Lane) is a low beige casino box one block behind the Strip towers, with a packed karaoke bar and the best cheap feed in the district. The barbecue counter is tiny, opens daily at 4 p.m., and plates root-beer-glazed baby back ribs with corn, slaw and garlic bread until the food runs out. Get there early in the evening. The barbecue room is 21+. The on-site brewhouse was demolished in 2022, but the house beers and Metro Pizza are still served, with rooms and plates at $. Dinner on Sahara Avenue and at the Hughes Center

Lotus of Siam (Sahara Avenue) reopened at its original address in May 2026 after five years dark, and it is why food travellers come east of the Strip. The shopfront gives nothing away, set inside Commercial Center, which opened in 1962 as Nevada's first strip mall. Bowls of khao soi and plates of crispy rice salad land on dark wood tables, and a glass-walled cellar holds 6,000 bottles. Reservations are essential, through OpenTable. The dining room is small and large tables are hard to get, so book weeks ahead or eat at the Naam Jai bar instead. Dinner is $$$.

Lotus of Siam (Sahara), Las Vegas

Battista's Hole in the Wall (Linq Lane) has been open since 1970 and reopened in November 2025 after a six-month renovation, with all 65 staff kept on through it. The room is dim and low-ceilinged under red-and-white checked tablecloths, and every inch of wall carries signed celebrity photographs and bric-a-brac. A strolling accordion player works the tables. House wine is still unlimited with dinner, at $$$. Reserve by phone.

*Firefly\ Tapas Kitchen + Bar on Flamingo** (335 Hughes Center Drive) moved off Paradise Road into a bigger glassy pavilion in the Hughes Center office park. The old Paradise address is permanently closed, so set your map to 335 Hughes Center Drive. Small plates of bacon-wrapped dates crowd the tables alongside pitchers of red sangria, and the patio runs fire features under mature trees. It is a late-night room, the tables outside are large, and plates are $$. Book through OpenTable.

Hofbräuhaus Las Vegas (opposite Virgin Hotels) is a replica Bavarian beer hall, barrel-vaulted and painted in blue-and-white lozenges, with long communal wooden benches and an oompah band in lederhosen on a central bandstand. Litre steins come out all evening and the live Bavarian music is free every night. The beer is brewed under the 500-year purity law and shipped in. The Schwemme hall seats up to 380 and the air-conditioned Biergarten up to 450, with private events to 1,000. It is the default answer for a loud dinner off the Strip, at $$.

Bars on East Tropicana and Paradise Road

A big wooden waterwheel stands in the middle of The Dispensary Lounge (East Tropicana), in a 1976 interior nobody has touched since: brown vinyl booths, orange shag-era wall panels and a jazz trio squeezed into the corner. The waterwheel is not turning at present. The bar is family-run, open 24 hours, with no door policy, and it is one of the longest-running live jazz rooms in Las Vegas. Book ahead for a live-jazz night, because the room is small. Drinks are $.

The Dispensary Lounge, Las Vegas

The Irish Spot (East Tropicana) took over the squat crenellated mock-castle that housed the Crown & Anchor for 30 years. That pub closed in July 2024 and this one opened in the same building in April 2026, now in green livery. Ask for the new name; the old one will get you nowhere. The scarlet UNLV Rebel Room takes parties, big tables fill the main room, and the screens carry Golden Knights and Premier League. Match nights are the busy ones. Pints and food are $$.

The Irish Spot, Las Vegas

Double Down Saloon (Paradise Road) has been open since 1992 and runs 24 hours with no door policy. Psychedelic cartoon murals cover the tiny black-painted box, a hand-lettered 'Ass Juice' sign hangs behind the bar, and the punk jukebox is battered. Touring punk bands still play the stage, which sits barely a foot off the floor. It was voted the city's best dive bar again in 2026. A dozen people fills the room, so split a larger party across other bars. Drinks are $.

Double Down Saloon, Las Vegas

Piranha Nightclub (Paradise Road) anchors the Fruit Loop, the gay nightlife district 1.5 miles east of the Strip, and it has been voted the city's best gay club six years running. Doors open at 10 p.m. every night of the year. Live piranha tanks are set into the walls, fire features burn over the entrance, and go-go dancers work raised plinths beside mirrored VIP boxes. Bottle service and VIP tables are bookable, and the Fruit Loop's other bars sit close enough to walk between for a crawl. Entry and drinks are $$.

Piranha Nightclub, Las Vegas

Player 1 Video Game Bar (Maryland Parkway) fills 9,500 sq ft of a strip mall with arcade-cabinet glow. Rows of Donkey Kong, Tron and NBA Jam face a wall of pinball machines, console sofas sit along one side, and 50 taps run the length of a neon-lit bar. The door is 21+, and a flat cover, $5 for locals and $8 for visitors, buys unlimited play, with drinks at $. Private parties are bookable. The Pinball Hall of Fame has moved to the south Strip, which leaves this as the vintage-gaming room on this side of town.

A round at Las Vegas National

Las Vegas National Golf Club (Paradise Palms) is Bert Stamps' 1961 parkland layout, four lakes set among tall pines and date palms, ringed by flat-roofed mid-century houses with the Strip towers rising straight behind the back nine. Tiger Woods won his first PGA Tour title here in 1996. The course is public, tee times are booked online, and carts and clubs are for hire, at $$. Local campaigners are fighting off redevelopment, so check tee times before you build a trip around a round here.

Opening days and booking

The Barrick stays dark until 23 October 2026 and then opens Tuesday to Saturday, and the Elvis date at the Westgate is 24 October. Reserve Lotus of Siam weeks ahead through OpenTable, phone Battista's, and reach the Ellis Island barbecue soon after it opens. See the Las Vegas guide for the rest of the city.
